Knowing how much music meant to the Neapolitans, St. Alphonsus began to write his own compositions as a way of connecting with the people while communicating the message of the Gospels.
Below we offer just a sampling of the many pieces he wrote. The most famous, of course, is "Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle," St. Alphonsus' Christmas carol. This carol is to the Italians what "Silent Night, Holy Night" is to the Americans. In English it means, "You come down from the stars." Giuseppe Verdi, the great Italian composer of operas, said of St. Alphonsus' great Christmas carol: "Christmas without 'Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle' is not Christmas." Enjoy! |
