Redemptorists to Exhibit Paintings Donated by Anne Rice
Paintings by Redemptorist Brother depict Christ's 14 Stations
DENVER, Co...March 30, 2007- Beginning Palm Sunday, April 1, the Redemptorists of the Denver Province will be featuring paintings donated to the congregation of Catholic priests and Brothers by Anne Rice, author of Christ the Lord. The web-based exhibit runs through Easter, April 8, on the Redemptorist/Denver Province "Home" page at www.redemptorists-denver.org.
The paintings - oil on copper - depict Christ's Passion during his Fourteen Stations of the Cross. They were painted by Brother Max Schmalzl, C.Ss.R. (1850-1930), a German Redemptorist known for his illustrations. The painting style is Nazarene, an influential l9th -century German art movement.
Bought from an antiques dealer in the French Quarter several years ago, Ms. Rice decided to donate the fourteen paintings to the Redemptorists in New Orleans once she learned that they were painted by a Redemptorist. The Fourteen Stations of the Cross hang today in the gallery at the provincial offices in Denver. (They can be seen now on the Photo Exhibit Archives page. Click the "Resources" button.)
An original set of 14 oil-on-canvas Stations of the Cross, also by Bro. Schmalzl, hangs in the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Seelos in New Orleans, La.
