Welcome...
The Redemptorists are a religious congregation of Catholic priests and Brothers founded in southern Italy in 1732 by St. Alphonsus Liguori, C.Ss.R. St. Alphonsus, a bishop and doctor of the Church, founded the Congregation to spread the Gospel to the poor and most abandoned. A successful lawyer of 10 years, who left the law to enter the priesthood, St. Alphonsus was appalled to learn that while Naples was abundant with priests, the shepherds, peasants and goat herders living in the hill country surrounding the city were spiritually abandoned.
In 1832, when the Congregation was 100 years old, six Redemptorists (three priests and three Brothers) journeyed to America to expand the ministry there. Presently, there are some 5,000 Redemptorists working for the poor and most abandoned in nearly every part of the world. More than 200 Redemptorists represent the Denver Province in much of the United States and parts of Brazil, Nigeria, and Thailand. These four letters, “C.Ss.R.,” after the name of every Redemptorist, stand for Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris. This is the official Latin title given to this religious Congregation. Translated into English, it means, “Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.” Like the first apostles, the Redemptorists’ task is to bring the message of salvation to all people, especially those who have been spiritually abandoned. Moreover... Redemptorists seek to "evangelize the poor and to be evangelized by them," so together we can experience the love of Jesus Christ. Redemptorists help to renew religious life by leading special retreats, revivals of the Catholic spirit through parish missions, and by publishing religious books and magazines. Redemptorists minister in inner-city parishes where the poorest of the poor have little or no contact with a Catholic priest. Redemptorists pay special attention to those living on the margins of our society, such as the Hispanics, Eastern Europeans, African-Americans and Asians. Redemptorists provide centers of prayer and retreat for renewal of people’s spirits. Redemptorists work with our youth, help those with addictions, and provide housing for the homeless. Redemptorists minister to and among the poor in Brazil, Nigeria, Thailand, and other depressed, abandoned parts of the world. |
